Hi! It certainly helps that you have a background in art- hand lettering takes a healthy dose of art and another of function. My best suggestion is to look at anything that has lettering in it- font catalogs, hand lettering blogs, store logos, posters, etc…and to be inspired by these. Maybe copy some out as part of your learning process, or write your own words in their style- giving credit where it is due if you decide to publish any on a personal blog, of course- and soon you will begin to understand what constitutes a good design.
